3 Tips to Keep Your Home Pollen-Free This Spring

Happy Family Spending Time Together

During the spring season in Temecula, California, a number of allergens come out in full force. Pollen is one of the most common allergens, causing a number of health symptoms in those who suffer from the allergy. Use the following helpful tips to protect yourself and your loved ones by allergy-proofing your home from pollen this season.

HVAC Maintenance

Your HVAC system can play a major role in keeping allergies under control throughout the changing seasons. It’s important to keep up with routine maintenance so your system can function properly, trap contaminants, and maintain clean, healthy indoor air. One of the maintenance tasks you can do yourself is changing the air filter every month or two. If you do suffer from allergies, consider upgrading to an air filter with a higher MERV rating, which can trap smaller particles. By changing this filter more regularly, the system is able to function more efficiently as well, so it’s a win-win.

You should also keep up with system maintenance, which should be performed by an HVAC technician. Having your air conditioner tuned up each spring and your furnace checked each fall will ensure that the components within each unit are working properly and removing pollen and other contaminants from the air. Regular maintenance can also extend the lifespan of your system.

Keep Your Windows Closed

As the weather gets pleasant, it’s tempting to leave your windows open to let in a cool breeze. However, this leads to trouble for allergy-sufferers. Pollen can easily come through the small holes in a window screen, resulting in additional allergens floating around in the air you breathe. Instead of opening the windows, set your air conditioning system to the fan setting in order to circulate fresh air that has been filtered.

Clean up the House

Allergens can also lurk within your home if you’re not cleaning regularly. Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA-rated filter to remove small particles from the flooring and wash your bedding in hot water at least once a week.
