4 HVAC Noises Coming from Your System That Should Concern You

Woman Hears Strange Noises

If your Moreno Valley, California, HVAC system is brand-new, on its last leg, or somewhere in between, it’s bound to make noises that you’re unfamiliar with. Not all noises mean that there’s something wrong with your system, but it’s important to know when certain noises should concern you. Learn more about four noises that should affect you.

Frequent Clicking

When you turn on your heat for the first time, you might hear a click signaling that the system is powering up. But if you continue to hear clicking from your control panel or outside compressor, it might mean that there’s a disruption in the system relay.

Hissing

Hissing noises coming from your ductwork and walls might come from air leaking. Leaking ductwork can cause a spike in your energy costs because your HVAC system works overtime to compensate for the air loss. This can also lead to additional repairs, poor overall air quality, and a dirtier air filter. It can also cause uneven temperatures throughout the home.

Rattling

Rattling noises can mean several things, depending on where it originates. If it comes from the outdoor unit, it might mean that a piece of debris, such as twigs or leaves, is lodged. Turn off the system and remove the debris. Call a comfort technician if you believe the compressor, fan, or condenser coils are damaged. If the rattling is internal, turn off the system and contact a professional.

Squeaking at Startup

Prolonged squeaking when you turn on the unit can signal that one of the parts is dirty or lose. It might also mean you have a loose belt or motor bearing. If the squeaking is minor, you can try to lubricate the belt with some WD-40. Otherwise, it’s best to schedule a tune-up so you can know for certain what is causing the noise.
